COURSE DESCRIPTION

PSP50916 Diploma of Interpreting (LOTE-English) is both useful and practical for it provides skills and knowledge required to interpret in general dialogue settings. It introduces the profession of interpreting and explores various contextual areas that interpreters work in.

 

Applicants must have:

  • satisfactorily completed Year 12 of secondary education or its equivalent, or have appropriate and relevant experience
  • an IELTS result of 5.5 (Academic) with a minimum score of 6 in the speaking and listening component; or have completed an EAP program at upper intermediate level or equivalent; or be able to demonstrate vocational proficiency through an entry examination, consisting of two dialogues in a paraprofessional level interpreting test. Students will have to achieve 50 percent or higher in order to be admitted into the program
  • the required standard in bilingual competency, both written and oral. (It is assumed that overseas students will have native or near-native proficiency in their local language but local students must pass an entry test in their chosen language.

Successful graduates may continue to study PSP60816 Advanced Diploma of Translating (English to Chinese) at Wentworth Institute.

The  Diploma  prepares  interpreters  for  work  primarily  in  the  general  community  services  and  business domains  which  may  include  such  areas  as  general  health,  welfare  and  community  services,  non-complex disability assistance, educational and social contexts, initial police interviews, over the counter interviews in customer and community information services, tourism, and other informal business and workplace contexts. NB  Certain employment conditions, assignments and work roles may require practising translators and interpreters to have NAATI  accreditation.   This may be achieved through completion of a  NAATI  approved qualification at the standard required by  NAATI,  and/or,  through  NAATI  testing.  This course has received approval by  NAATI.  Students who successfully complete this course and achieve the relevant assessment marks will be recommended for NAATI Accreditation as a Paraprofessional Interpreter (Mandarin).
